Dan Mangan Takes on Florida
Dan Mangan has spent his career mastering a rare kind of magic—transforming raw emotion into poetic introspection and intimate storytelling into sweeping, cinematic anthems. A two-time JUNO Award-winning songwriter, he swims between solo ventures, collaborations with luminaries like Blacksmith, and scoring for film and television, creating a body of work that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant.
For the first time, Mangan is bringing his singular energy to Florida. Known for its vibrant contradictions—a melting pot of culture and chaos, history and modernity—Florida offers the perfect stage for Mangan’s boundless curiosity and knack for finding beauty in unexpected places. From chasing snakes to Will Smith tributes, Mangan is ready to embrace the unpredictable, weaving these new experiences into his tapestry of work.
As he embarks on this leg of his journey, Mangan shares his thoughts on travel, chaos, and the joy of creating something magical in uncertain times. And while he might return home with stories, connections, and, quite possibly, a python, it’s clear this tour promises more than just music—it’s a meeting of worlds, perspectives, and endless possibilities.
How has travel shaped your music, and what do you hope to take away from this Florida tour?
Travel is an antidote to ignorance. It opens your mind in ways that school cannot. I remember the first time I went to Europe, I thought, “Wow, the streets are so narrow here,”—but then I remembered that their streets were made hundreds of years before ours… so, are they narrow? Or are our streets freakishly wide? One begins to understand that there is no default... no normal—only relative variations from other variations. One begins to see themselves not as the base from which others deviate but just as an infinitesimal cog in an incalculable machine. And that is freedom. To be free of the weight of constantly seeking evidence of our own importance. From my trip to Florida, I hope to take away a python.
What excites you most about touring in Florida for the first time?
It’s a pretty volatile time. I’ve never been to Florida, but its general brand is absolutely chaotic. From afar, it appears like the wild west. A place where anything goes. Where politics are extreme. I am excited to meet real humans and to bring home a sense of Floridans that is rooted in experience rather than internet memes.
Are there any personal rituals or items you always bring with you while touring?
I bring compostable straws for bubble-blowing vocal warmups and try to catch a python before each show.
Are there any local spots you’re planning to explore between shows?
I know nothing of where I am headed! Educate me!
What’s on your Florida road trip playlist?
I’ll be playing Will Smith’s song “Miami” on repeat during the drives and will play only covers of Will Smith’s song “Miami” during my shows.
What’s next for you after this tour? Any new projects in the works?
Big news coming up! Will be launching my new album very shortly. The best work of my life. High watermark. Recorded in 6 days in a cabin in the woods with my best buds. Absolutely cosmic and magical experience. With the world how it is currently, working on this album has truly kept me hopeful and sane.
